Avatar, the best movie I’ve ever seen

loocas | miscellaneous,opinions | Monday, December 28th, 2009

This film has to be seen at least two times! I’ve seen it three times already and I’ll be going to see it at least once more again. The experience is mind-blowing! This is, simply put, the best movie I’ve ever seen.

The first two times I went to see the standard, “2D”, version of the film, which was in the original audio. And it was massive. But today, I’ve seen this masterpiece in IMAX in 3D, which seems it has always been meant to be seen like that. And I must say, the visual orgies are overwhelming! I was sitting there (in the very center of the movie theater), mouth and eyes wide open with goosebumps all over my body. Pandora completely grabbed me and didn’t let go until the final credits showed up. It was this massive!

The only drawback was the Czech dubbing. It wasn’t bad, but I’d rather see the film with the original sound. Unfortunately the dubbed version is the only one available for IMAX in this country. But still, since I’d already seen it in English twice, it wasn’t such a big deal after all.

Anyways, if you haven’t seen this movie in IMAX yet, BOOK YOUR TICKETS NOW!

3ds Max 2010, Advanced to Expert book – sent to printer

loocas | 3ds Max,miscellaneous,opinions | Saturday, July 18th, 2009

I received a word, that the 3ds Max 2010, Advanced to Expert book, I’ve contributed to (1 chapter + a tech. review of the MAXScript Chapter), had been sent to the printer and thus is on schedule to be ready for shipment in August! This is great news and I’m really looking forward to the publication (I’ll receive a copy of the book, which is awesome :) ).

If you’re still hesitant to preorder, 3DATS has put up a few pages from each of the beefed-up chapters for your viewing pleasure, go see them on the book’s page.

But if you want to stay on my blog ;) here are the direct links for you:

The full table of contents in PDF
The sample pages from all of the 20 chapters, also in a PDF

I very highly recommend this book for any advanced (not limited to 3ds Max) user, from what I’ve seen, it’s a massive publication full of the juiciest information on the subject. If I didn’t receive a complimentary copy of the book, I’d have preordered one as well as there are some chapters I’m particularly looking forward to read (Color Management, Compositing, Managing Large-scale Projects and pretty much the entire sixth part of the book).

For only $99.90 USD + Shipping, this is a bargain! Coz’ remember, education is the only thing nobody can take away from you ;)

3ds Max 2010, Advanced to Expert book

I was lucky enough to have been picked as one of the authors for 3dats’s new book, titled: 3ds Max 2010 Architectural Visualisation, Advanced to Expert.

3ds Max 2010 Architectural Visualisation, Advanced to ExpertMy chapter was on advanced techniques of UV mapping and unwrapping. I covered stuff that I haven’t seen anywhere in a book or a tutorial, so it should be pretty exciting for those, and especially for those, who do not like UV mapping (I guess, 99% of all artists? :D )! Yes, you should go buy the book and read the chapter (of course there are tons of quality information from other authors), since you’ll get to know how UVs work, what are the common mistakes and pitfalls when UV mapping and mainly, how to spend as little time and effort UVing your complex meshes.

The book is chock-full of very high quality stuff, from what I’ve been able to see so far, which also makes it one of the most advanced topic book on the market I know of. It has been put together by 20 expert authors, writhing each individual chapter, to ensure you’re getting the best info from some of the best artists in the industry!

The book is up for a preorder now, for about $99 USD + Shipping and I think this is a bargain, considering some training DVDs from one author on one topic cost about as much. This is a great deal and if you ask me ;) do yourself a favour and preorder the book today!

Transformers 2 Revenge Of The Fallen

If you haven’t seen this orgasmic ILM showreel, GO SEE IT NOW!

It’s simple, if you ever want to even think about calling yourself a VFX artist, forget about it! unless, of course, you work at ILM, in that case I bow down and disappear silently…

I’ve seen it twice already and once I get to the US (for this year’s Siggraph), I’ll go see it at a local IMAX as I feel it’s my duty as a VFX artist wannabe to honor this work of pure CG awesomeness in 4K!

Hats off to all those involved in making this VFX masterpiece…

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I saw this amazing film with even more amazing VFX last night and I was stunned! Not only by the story, but mainly by the visual effects. If you haven’t seen this film yet, you simply have to go to see it! It’s definitely a milestone in making hyper-realistic human characters in super fine detail on the big screen! My kudos to Digital Domain for the VFX on the hero character, Benjamin. HATS OFF!

Diablo 2, the unbeatable classic

loocas | miscellaneous,opinions | Thursday, May 14th, 2009

In the anxious anticipation of Diablo III, we wanted to re-live the nostalgia of the unbeatable classic, Diablo 2, with my girlfriend. So we sat down and started playing in the co-op mode, which is tons of fun! The game, despite its terrible graphics for todays standards (max. 800×600 resolution, 256 color palette), is still highly addictive and playable! We’re loving it!

I’m a barbarian (as always ;) ) and my girl plays as an assasin. Hopefully we’ll finally beat Diablo over the weekend, however, based on our performance against the last boss, I highly doubt it. :D

I hope Diablo III will be released soon, because when it’s out, I’ll buy 2 copies and play ’til my fingers bleed or until we beat the game (whichever comes first)! ;)
