It is true, this year’s siggraph, possibly plagued by the challenging economy, is quite dissappointing.
Old friends are not here, many of the companies I look forward to checking out are not on the exhibition floor (Pixologic, The Foundry, SouthPaw, Gnomon, Boxx etc…), the newly released major applications from major players (Autodesk) are really weak.
Everyone keeps repeating that it’s not only due to the economy, but also due to the location. New Orleans isn’t really the hottest place, in terms of CGI technology. Also, everyone keeps saying that the next year’s Siggraph, hosted in L.A., will be huge, which is understandable and easy to believe.
The conferences were sweet as well as the user meetings, so thankfully this doesn’t show signs of the falling trend in recent years.
Well, we’ll see. I should have some photos from the show tomorrow, so I’ll treat you with a few actual views.

Yeah, finally, after a year, one of the biggest and, arguably, most important CG conferrences is open in New Orleans.
I’m lucky enough to be able to attend and see what’s up and what’s comming in the following years in the industry. Also, I’m proud to be a part of the Cebas group that’ll be showing off some of the new, hot stuff from Cebas at their booth, so if you’re around, drop by and say hi

I saw this amazing film with even more amazing VFX last night and I was stunned! Not only by the story, but mainly by the visual effects. If you haven’t seen this film yet, you simply have to go to see it! It’s definitely a milestone in making hyper-realistic human characters in super fine detail on the big screen! My kudos to Digital Domain for the VFX on the hero character, Benjamin. HATS OFF! :bowdown:
SideFX Software has announced an immediate release of Houdini 10 a very, very promising release to say the least.
I personally don’t use Houdini in my pipeline as I don’t do much of VFX work (explosions, fire, smoke, fluids etc…), however, Houdini is such an amazing package it deserves a spot here! Definitely give Houdini a try, it’s a very complex and difficult to master package, but once you get your head wrapped around it, you won’t have a problem finding a very good spot at the most amazing companies in the world.

Great news, at least some, that came from the Autodesk aquisition of Softimage is that it plans to include CAT in the upcoming 3ds Max version (3ds Max 2010), which I consider being fantastic!
CAT will finally mean a lot of time and effort saved when dealing with character rigging, setup and animation. The layering system is fantastic as is the rig itself. I don’t know how far will Autodesk push the interoperability of the rig and MotionBuilder or Biped for example, but knowing Autodesk, that’ll most likely be up to us, the end users and TDs. I’m planning to base my complete character pipeline around CAT, of course, only under the single condition that CAT works the way it should! and tie everything up to MotionBuilder rigs, possibly Biped (but probably not as I don’t use Biped at all), and other modules and areas of 3ds Max. The next step will be interoperability with Maya, which’ll allow me to utilize Maya’s fantastic cMuscle and nCloth.
I have the tools pre-planned here mostly on paper. The overall pipeline will be revolved around XML and MySQL, as much open source as it gets. So the core, proprietary components that are CAT and other pieces will have to work perfectly in order for me to go into this venture. But the fact that every seat of 3ds Max 2010 will have CAT is a very solid and good foundation. I like this idea, it’ll definitely save me tons of work and time, which is crucial. It’s the one and only new feature I’m actually very excited about.
But, if all fails and Autodesk (again) proves itself incompetent, arogant and stupid, there’s always a fantastic solution from Kees Rijnen as he announced his amazing Puppetshop to be available for commercial use for free! He’s awesome!
In the mean time, get to know CAT and learn it in and out as that’s gonna become the one and primary solution for complex character animation work in the near future. I believe it, you should too!
No matter how the title sounds, this article is about 3D CGI and 3ds Max primarily.
From the TD (Technical Direction) point of view, the parent world is what you’ll be dealing with most of the times when it comes to objects’ (nodes, entities, fragments tec…) manipulation and mainly exchange between different software packages. Why? Let me explain. When you draw an object into your scene, let’s say a single box called “MyBox”, the object automatically becomes a part of a hierarchy. What is hierarchy you ask? Think of it as a relationship between objects (or whatever for that matter). There are strict rules that apply every time all the times for all objects. So, the box, MyBox, becomes automatically a child of the “World” – an invisible MAXObject.
